If you have forgotten your Instagram password, the key question is whether you can still **access your account**. Meta says you must be able to log in to request deletion; it cannot delete the account for you simply because you ask. That rule protects accounts from deletion requests made by someone who does not control them.

You may be signed in already on a phone, able to use a connected sign-in method, or able to reset your password. The exact confirmation steps can vary. Start with the route that fits your situation, then make the deletion request from the account you own. There is no legitimate reporting shortcut for deleting your own profile because you cannot remember a password.

## If you are already signed in

Check that the profile shown in Instagram is the **specific account** you want to delete. If you use more than one Instagram account, this matters: deletion is a permanent decision about the selected account.

Meta's current Help Center says you can request deletion from a phone or computer through **Accounts Center**. In the available interface, open settings, then **Accounts Center** → **Personal details** → **Account ownership and control** → **Deactivation or deletion**. Select the Instagram account, choose **Delete account**, and follow the confirmation prompts. The wording and route to Accounts Center may differ between the app and web interface, so use the labels shown on your device.

Being signed in does not guarantee that you can finish without another identity check. If Instagram asks for your password and you cannot supply it, use the recovery steps below. Do not assume that switching from the app to a browser will bypass that check; Meta explicitly allows account deletion from a phone as well as a computer.

Before confirming deletion, consider exporting a copy of photos, posts, or other information you want to keep. Meta warns that its export tool is no longer available to you after the account has been deleted. Also check whether **temporary deactivation** would serve your purpose if you want a break but may return later.

## If you cannot sign in because you forgot the password

Use Instagram's sign-in recovery flow, rather than a third-party service. On the sign-in screen, choose **Forgot password?** or the equivalent recovery link. Enter the username, email address, or phone number linked to the account and follow Instagram's instructions. Meta's Help Center describes a recovery link sent to a linked email address or phone number when that route is available.

Only use a recovery message you requested through Instagram's own interface. If the message does not arrive, check that you entered the correct account information and review Instagram's current help for missing reset messages. When you regain access, return to the deletion controls in Accounts Center. If the confirmation asks you to authenticate again, complete that step using the access you recovered.

Some accounts may have a connected Facebook sign-in route. It can help only if that route was already set up for your Instagram account and you can still use it. Do not assume that having any Facebook account will automatically unlock a separate Instagram profile. Use the sign-in methods actually offered for your account.

## If you lost the linked email address or phone number

First try to regain access to the email account or phone number that Instagram uses for recovery. Meta advises contacting your email provider about recovering an inaccessible mailbox; Instagram cannot restore access to that external email account.

If you are **still signed in to Instagram**, Meta says you can update the email address or phone number in your profile settings to one you can access. Do that before signing out, then complete any verification shown. You need to be able to reach the account settings to make this change. If you are signed out and cannot pass Instagram's recovery process, you cannot solve the problem by changing the contact details from outside the account.

Meta's help warns that if you cannot access the registered email and did not link the Instagram and Facebook accounts, it may be unable to grant account access. Follow Instagram's current sign-in help for any recovery option shown to you, but do not rely on a promised support email, contact form, or guaranteed human deletion on your behalf. This guide cannot determine whether your particular account will be recoverable.

## What happens after you request deletion?

Meta says an account and its information are permanently deleted after a deletion waiting period, commonly 30 days from the request. The period for cancelling deletion can vary by region. During the waiting period, the account content is not accessible to other Instagram users. Completion of the deletion process may take longer, and Meta describes limited retention in backups or for legal, safety, and policy reasons. Read the date and instructions in the confirmation shown for your account rather than assuming that every region or case uses the same deadline.

If you change your mind before the deadline displayed to you, follow Instagram's current sign-in and cancellation instructions. After permanent deletion, the information is not recoverable through the account. If you only wanted the profile hidden for a while, choose **Deactivate account** in the account control flow instead of **Delete account**.

## A safe decision sequence

Confirm you are dealing with your own account. If you are signed in, locate its Accounts Center deletion control. If you are signed out, recover access through Instagram or the linked email or phone. Export information you want to keep, then review the selected account and deletion confirmation carefully. If you cannot regain account access, Meta does not offer deletion by someone else on your behalf. Reporting your own account as an impersonator is not a password recovery or deletion method.
