**Check whether the chat was archived before assuming it was deleted.** Messenger has an Archived Chats area for conversations moved out of the main inbox. A conversation that remains there can be opened. A chat deliberately deleted from your account is different: an archive, data export, or third-party scanner should not be presented as a guaranteed way to restore it.

People use “deleted” for several different problems. They may have hidden a conversation, removed a single message from their own view, used an option affecting all participants, lost a device before encrypted history was restored, or deleted an entire chat. The useful first step is identifying which event occurred. The old version of this article blurred these states and recommended a third-party recovery app without evidence.

## Look in Archived Chats and search your inbox

Open Messenger in the official app or website and look for the conversation using the available search. Then open its Archived Chats area. Meta introduced Archived Chats as a folder for conversations intentionally moved away from the main inbox. [Meta's archive announcement](https://about.fb.com/news/2021/05/better-ways-to-express-yourself-new-messenger-features/) describes this behavior.

If you find the chat there, it was not recovered from deletion; it remained in your account. Open it and use the current Messenger controls if you want it back in your main inbox. Depending on the app version, the available menu labels may differ. A missing result in search or archives does not by itself prove where the content went, but it rules out the simplest explanation.

Message requests and other inbox areas can also contain conversations that never entered your primary Chats list. Check them if the other person was not already connected to you. Be careful not to click unfamiliar links while doing so.

## Understand what was removed

Deleting a chat from your own Messenger view should not be equated with archiving it. Nor does it mean the other participant's copy disappears. For a single message, Messenger's current controls may offer different removal scopes. Read the confirmation shown in the app before acting; it describes whose view will change.

If another participant still has the conversation, you can ask them to share a particular message or screenshot if appropriate. Their copy is theirs to decide about, and a forwarded excerpt may lack context. Do not try to access their account or use an app that claims to reveal their inbox.

The old article told readers that a deleted conversation was likely waiting in Archive. That is true only if it was archived in the first place. The distinction is the core answer: finding an archived chat is possible; undoing a confirmed deletion has different and often much narrower limits.

## Could a Facebook information export help?

Meta provides an export of information associated with your account through Accounts Center. It can be useful for messages that remain available in the selected data and date range. [Meta's information controls](https://www.facebook.com/help/193677450678703/) explain that users can access or export their own information.

An export is not proof that Facebook keeps a user-retrievable copy of every message after deletion. The previous version of this guide claimed that ticking “Messages” would produce all deleted chats “somewhere in the cloud.” We found no first-party basis for that promise. If you request an export, inspect only what the file actually contains. Do not tell a person that an absent message is waiting in another export format or that a PC browser unlocks a special recovery path.

Keep any exported file private. It may contain conversations and other personal information belonging to you and others. Use Meta's account settings rather than handing the file to a third-party recovery service.

## What if your encrypted history is missing on a new device?

Messenger has been moving personal chats to end-to-end encryption. For eligible chats, Meta describes secure storage as a way for a person to access previously saved encrypted chat history across devices after they set up a security method. [Meta's Messenger encryption explanation](https://about.fb.com/news/2024/03/end-to-end-encryption-on-messenger-explained/) covers why a PIN or other method may be needed.

If the chat still existed but is missing after changing devices, review the official Messenger prompt and secure-storage settings on a device that still has the history. Follow Meta's current restoration instructions for your configured method. This is an account-history access issue, not an undelete feature. It depends on how your history was protected and what was saved before the device change.

Do not reset a secure-storage method casually. Meta warns that deleting secure storage permanently deletes its encrypted chat history and that Messenger cannot restore that backup. [Meta's secure-storage reset Help](https://www.facebook.com/help/messenger-app/1256202571735558/) explains this specific consequence. A support article about resetting a PIN should not be treated as a way to recover already deleted messages.

## Why third-party recovery apps are a poor answer

The earlier article named a third-party app and said it could scan a device or network for all deleted Facebook messages. We found no Meta evidence that such a tool can restore a Messenger conversation deleted from the service. Installing software or granting credentials on the strength of that claim could expose the remaining account and data.

Use the official Messenger app, Facebook Accounts Center, and Meta Help for checks. If a tool asks for a password or a copied message archive, pause. Meta warns that unauthorized sites and apps given credentials can access private messages and other account information. [Meta's credential safety guidance](https://about.fb.com/news/2022/07/how-meta-safeguards-people-against-clone-sites/) sets out that risk.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is an archived Messenger chat deleted?

No. Archiving moves a conversation away from the main inbox while retaining it in the account's Archived Chats area. Search there first.

### Can the other person still have the conversation?

Possibly. Removing content from your own view does not establish what remains in the other participant's view. Ask them directly if sharing a copy is appropriate; do not try to enter their account.

### Does a data download include every deleted message?

Do not assume so. An export gives you what Meta makes available from your account under the chosen scope, not a universal undelete function. The current source provides no basis to guarantee that deliberately deleted Messenger chats appear there.

### Can secure storage restore a deleted chat?

Secure storage concerns access to previously saved encrypted history, especially across devices. It is not a promise to reverse a deliberate chat deletion. Meta explicitly warns that deleting the secure-storage backup can permanently remove encrypted history.

The safest sequence is to search your existing inbox and archive, inspect available account exports without assuming deleted content will appear, and use official secure-storage steps only when the problem is missing encrypted history on a device.
