**To turn off your Active Status, open TikTok and go to Profile → Menu (☰) → Settings and privacy → Privacy → Activity Status, then switch it off.** Your eligible mutual followers will no longer see your active or last-active indicator. You will also stop seeing theirs. TikTok says this setting is off by default and is available only to people aged 18 or older.

If you are looking for a way to use TikTok without a green dot appearing beside your profile photo, that is the setting you need. It controls an online-presence signal. It does not make your account private, erase a message you sent, or change the separate settings for profile and post view history.

## Turn off the green dot step by step

1. Open the **TikTok app** and tap **Profile** at the bottom.
2. Tap the **Menu** button at the top of your profile.
3. Choose **Settings and privacy**, then **Privacy**.
4. Find **Activity Status** and turn the switch **off**.

You can use the same path to turn it back on later. If the switch is already off, you do not need to change it. TikTok documents this as an app setting, so use the app's Privacy screen rather than assuming a browser's account menu has the same controls. Menu labels can change; if the screen on your device differs, look for **Activity Status** within TikTok's own Privacy settings rather than following an old screenshot exactly.

The tradeoff is reciprocal. Once you turn Activity Status off, your mutual followers cannot see when you are active or were last active through this feature, and you cannot see their Activity Status even if they leave theirs on. This is expected behavior, not a sign that the setting failed.

## Who could see your status before you turned it off?

TikTok defines a **mutual follower** as someone you follow who also follows you. Activity Status is visible between two mutual followers only when **both** have enabled it. A person who merely follows you, or a person you follow who does not follow you back, does not qualify through this feature. If either eligible person switches the setting off, neither sees the other's activity status.

For eligible mutual followers, TikTok can show a **green dot** on a profile photo when someone is online. It may appear in Inbox, a message thread, the mutual follower's profile, or a list shown while selecting someone to tag or share a video with. When the person is no longer currently active, TikTok can instead show a relative **last active** time in Inbox or message threads. TikTok says it displays that status for up to two days; after that, no status is shown.

The dot is only an indicator, not a live availability promise. TikTok warns that it may remain visible for a while after someone becomes inactive. Seeing it does not tell you that the person has read your message, is willing to reply, or is watching your video. Conversely, not seeing a dot does not prove the person is offline. One or both settings may be off, the accounts may not be mutual followers, or the last-active window may have passed.

## Why you may not see the Activity Status switch

TikTok says this feature requires users to be **at least 18**. If the account is below that age, the absence of the switch is consistent with TikTok's eligibility rule. Do not change an account's birth date simply to try to unlock a privacy feature.

If you believe the account is eligible, first confirm you are in **Profile → Settings and privacy → Privacy** in the TikTok app and that you are looking for **Activity Status**, rather than **Profile views** or **Post views**. Those are different controls. A missing switch alone does not establish why your particular account lacks it; TikTok's public Activity Status help does not provide a complete diagnostic list for every device, account, or region. Use TikTok's in-app support if the documented path and your account do not match.

You also may not see another person's status even while your own switch is on. Check the mutual-follow condition before assuming that person hid their status. TikTok does not give you a reliable way to determine which of the eligibility conditions is responsible when an indicator is absent.

## Activity Status is separate from profile and post views

Turning off Activity Status addresses **when you appear online**, not every trace of a visit or interaction. TikTok has separate settings for **Profile view history** and **Post view history**. If your concern is whether someone can see that you visited a profile or watched a post, inspect those settings individually under Privacy rather than relying on the Activity Status switch.

[TikTok's Profile view history help](https://support.tiktok.com/en/account-and-privacy/account-privacy-settings/tiktok-profile-visit-history) explains that the feature can show visits from accounts that also have it enabled. It has its own eligibility conditions and control. [TikTok's Post view history help](https://support.tiktok.com/en/account-and-privacy/account-privacy-settings/tiktok-post-view-history) likewise describes a separate post-view setting and notes that likes or comments can still be visible as interactions. Neither page says that switching off Activity Status automatically switches off those view-history features.

The same distinction applies to messages. TikTok's **Read status** controls whether a message can show as read when both people have that setting on; it is managed under **Privacy → Direct messages**, not by the Activity Status switch. Turning off your green dot does not mean a sent message disappears or a message's read indicator follows the same setting. If you want to review what messaging reveals, check [TikTok's direct-message settings](https://support.tiktok.com/en/account-and-privacy/account-privacy-settings/direct-message) separately.

## A practical privacy check

After turning off Activity Status, return to its Privacy screen and confirm the switch remains off. Then review the other controls that match your actual concern: **Profile views** for profile-visit history, **Post views** for post-view history, and **Direct messages → Read status** for message-read indicators. Each control has its own eligibility and tradeoffs. Avoid assuming that one switch is a universal “invisible mode.”

If what you really want is fewer messages, fewer notifications, or a smaller audience for your posts, Activity Status is only one part of the answer. Those are separate TikTok controls. Change the specific control for the experience you want, and revisit it if TikTok changes its menus or your account type.

### Can a non-mutual follower see my green dot?

TikTok describes Activity Status visibility between mutual followers who both have it on. A person who is not a mutual follower does not meet that documented condition. This does not make all other information about your account private; review your account and content privacy settings separately.

### Can I see someone's last active time with my Activity Status off?

No, not through this feature. TikTok says turning it off prevents both you and your mutual followers from seeing one another's Activity Status, even if the other person has left theirs on.

### Does no green dot mean someone turned Activity Status off?

No. An absent dot has several possible explanations. TikTok requires two eligible mutual followers with the setting on, and it shows last-active information only for up to two days. The dot can also linger briefly after someone leaves the app. Treat the indicator as a limited UI signal, not a dependable record of another person's activity or intent.

### Does this also hide my profile visits or message reads?

No such combined effect is documented. TikTok provides separate **Profile view history**, **Post view history**, and **Read status** controls. Review those settings independently if they matter to you.
