Instagram **Direct Messages** are part of the Instagram app. If you want the newest version available for your phone, check Instagram in your device's **official app store** and install an available update. Then reopen Instagram and check your messages. An update may fix a local app problem or bring a feature your account is eligible to use, but it does not guarantee that a particular button will appear or that every messaging bug is fixed.

## Update Instagram on an iPhone

Open the **App Store**, tap your account picture, and look under **App Updates**. If Instagram has an **Update** button, select it. Apple's [App Store instructions](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102629) describe this manual route and explain that App Store apps normally update automatically unless that setting has been changed. If you see **Open** instead of **Update**, an update may not be offered to your device through that listing at the moment.

After the update, reopen Instagram and enter Direct Messages through the message control shown in your app. If a specific chat still fails, note whether all chats or only one are affected. That distinction is more useful than repeatedly installing the same version.

## Update Instagram on Android

Open **Google Play**, tap your profile picture, choose **Manage apps & device**, and inspect **Updates available**. Update Instagram if it appears. Google's [Play Help](https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/113412?hl=en-english) also says an app's detail page shows an **Update** button when an update is available. If the store offers only **Open**, it has no update to offer you through that listing right now.

Use the official Play Store for your installed app. Avoid a site that claims to unlock missing DM features through an unofficial package or asks for your Instagram login. Installing a different app is not the same as updating your current account's Direct Messages.

## What if the message feature still looks different?

First confirm that you are signed into the intended Instagram account, that your internet connection works, and that you are looking at the same device and account where the feature was expected. App layout and feature availability may differ by account or rollout. The app store can tell you whether an app version is offered; it cannot promise access to every Instagram experiment or messaging feature.

If messages fail to send or the inbox will not load, record the error shown in the app. Use Instagram's in-app Help or report-a-problem path if one is available to you. Do not assume that a friend having a feature means your account will receive it immediately after updating, and do not assume that a successful update proves an unrelated account or connection problem has been fixed.
