How to Change Your Birthday on Facebook and Control Who Sees It
Learn how to correct your Facebook birthday, choose who sees the day and year, and check Accounts Center limits and linked-account scope.
To change an incorrect birthday on Facebook, open your profile's About information, find Contact and basic info, and choose Edit beside your birth date. Facebook may take you into Accounts Center to save the corrected date. If you only want fewer people to see your birthday, use the separate audience control beside your day/month or birth year instead. Changing the date and changing its visibility solve different problems.
Meta's birthday Help says you can update both your birthday and who can see it. It also says you can change your birthday only a limited number of times. Read the choices shown in your own account before saving: menus can look different on the app, a mobile browser, and a computer, and a recent change may limit what you can do next.
First decide what you need to change
If your date of birth is wrong, edit the actual day, month, or year. This is account information, so enter the true date. A change that affects age-based protections may require extra review. Hiding the date from other people is a separate setting and does not correct an inaccurate account record.
If the date is correct but too public, leave it as it is and change its audience. Facebook lets you control who can see the day and month and who can see the year. You might want friends to know the day but keep your age less visible, or you might prefer not to show either part. Those choices do not require inventing a different birthday.
If you are concerned about birthday reminders to friends, check the visibility of the day and month. Meta's Help says that if you do not share the day and month, friends will not receive an approaching-birthday notification. That makes the old claim that all friends are notified incorrect. A person's own notification settings and Facebook's current interface also affect what that person actually sees, so do not treat a visible date as a guarantee that everyone receives the same alert.
Change the date of birth from your Facebook profile
Use Meta's current birthday Help as the reference when a menu differs from these steps. The official profile path is:
- Open your own Facebook profile while signed into the correct account.
- Choose About, then find Contact and basic info or a similarly named basic-information section.
- Under Basic info, choose Edit beside your date of birth.
- If Facebook moves you to Accounts Center, review the birthday shown there, make the correction, and save it.
- Return to the profile and verify the date and visibility settings separately.
On some app layouts, you may reach the same account information through Settings and privacy → Settings → Accounts Center → Personal details → Birthday. Treat this as a navigation alternative, not a universal five-tap sequence. Confirm the account shown at the top of the screen before editing. If you manage more than one profile or have other Meta accounts in the same center, a wrong selection can make it seem that the change did not work.
Do not tap through an age-verification or review prompt without reading it. Meta says it may require age verification if it suspects a user is changing a birthday from under 18 to over 18 to avoid teen protections. The exact prompt depends on the account and region. There is no legitimate shortcut that this article can promise for bypassing such a review.
Choose who can see your birthday
Return to your profile's About → Contact and basic info section and look for the audience selector beside your birthday. Meta's Help distinguishes the day and month from the birth year, so inspect each audience control rather than assuming one switch covers both. Choose from the options Facebook actually offers your account, save, and then view the profile information again to confirm the result.
This audience setting changes what other people can see on your Facebook profile. It does not mean Facebook stops using your real date for age-related account rules. If you want to avoid public birthday wishes, start with the day/month visibility. If you want people to know the day but not the year, consider their settings separately. The setting that matches your preference is the one to use; there is no universal privacy choice for every reader.
If Facebook offers a View As or public-profile preview, it can help you see how a stranger may view your profile, but it is not a substitute for checking the specific birthday audience control. A friend can have a different view from a stranger. If you manage an additional Facebook profile, confirm that profile's own birthday visibility as well.
What happens if Instagram is connected?
An Instagram account being connected to Facebook is not enough to justify the old blanket sentence that a Facebook birthday edit “will transfer” to Instagram in every circumstance. Meta's birthday Help says birthdays must match across accounts in the same Accounts Center. Meta's Accounts Center overview explains that this is where connected experiences and account information can be managed.
Check which Facebook and Instagram accounts are actually listed in your Accounts Center before changing the date. After saving, inspect the birthday shown for each relevant account or follow Meta's on-screen instructions. Do not assume that two accounts on the same phone are linked, or that a change to one independent center silently updated another. Visibility controls may also differ between Facebook and Instagram; confirm each app's own audience or profile settings rather than extrapolating from Facebook.
Meta also distinguishes an additional Facebook profile from a separate Instagram account. Its Help says the birthday on a main Facebook profile applies to its additional profiles, while birthday visibility can be set on each additional profile. If you use those profiles, review the correct one before concluding that everyone sees the same date.
If Facebook will not let you change the birthday
First, confirm whether you are editing the date or just its audience. The date control can be limited after recent changes; Meta says there is a limit on how many times you can change your birthday. If the control is absent or a warning appears, read the reason shown in your account and use the linked official Help or review process. Repeatedly trying different devices will not establish that the limit has disappeared.
If Facebook asks to confirm your age, follow the official in-app or Help Center process. Do not send identity documents, login codes, or passwords to a person who claims they can change the date for you. If you cannot sign in, resolve account access through Facebook's own recovery tools before attempting a profile edit. A support workflow should be opened from a trusted Facebook or Meta page, not from an unsolicited message.
Finally, reopen the profile and Accounts Center after saving. Check the actual date, the day/month audience, and the year audience. Those three observations answer different questions and make it easier to identify what still needs correction.
Frequently asked questions
Will changing my Facebook birthday notify all my friends?
No universal notice can be promised. Meta says friends will not receive an approaching-birthday notification if you do not share the day and month. Check that audience setting if reminders are your concern. Do not assume that changing the date itself sends the same message to every friend.
Can I hide my birth year but show my birthday day and month?
Meta describes separate visibility controls for the day/month and the year. Review the options offered beside each part of your birthday and save the combination you prefer. Your account's available audience choices govern the result.
Why does Facebook send me to Accounts Center?
Accounts Center manages some information and connected experiences across Meta accounts. Meta's birthday Help directs date editing there from the profile. Check which accounts are listed before saving and confirm the result afterward.
Can I keep changing my birthday until it looks right?
Do not rely on that. Meta limits how many times the date can be changed, and a recent edit may require waiting or review. Enter the correct date carefully, read any warning, and use official Help if you are blocked.
