How to Download Instagram Data

Find Instagram's information export in Accounts Center, choose the account and data you need, then download and protect the resulting archive.

To request a copy of the information available for your Instagram account, open Accounts Center from Instagram's settings, find Your information and permissions, and choose the option to export or download your information. Select the Instagram account and review the choices on the request screen before confirming. When the file is ready, collect it through the instructions Instagram gives you and store it somewhere private.

That is an export of the information made available through Meta's tool. It is not a promise that every message, deleted item, or piece of content you have ever seen will be present, and it cannot restore access to a compromised account. Meta moved its information download tools into Accounts Center for Instagram and Facebook; the exact labels and available choices can change by account, device, and app version.

Before you request an export

First decide what you need the file for. Are you keeping a personal record of posts you published? Looking for account activity? Preparing to delete your account? The answer affects which account, categories, time period, and destination you should choose. An archive can contain more private information than the one item you wanted, so avoid requesting a broader file simply out of habit.

Make sure you are signed in to the Instagram account whose information you want. If you manage multiple profiles in Accounts Center, check the selected profile carefully. Meta says linked Facebook and Instagram information can be downloaded in one request or separately; selecting Instagram alone helps keep the result focused. Sharing a login email does not mean every account should be included.

If account deletion is your reason, request and inspect the export before deleting the account. Instagram's account-deletion help says the export tool is no longer accessible after deletion. Do not delete the account because a request has merely been submitted: wait until you have opened the file and confirmed it contains the specific items you need. Keep your own originals of important photos and videos, too.

How to request your Instagram information

  1. Open Instagram while signed in to the relevant profile. From your profile, open the menu and look for Accounts Center in settings. On a computer, use Instagram's settings area to reach the same Accounts Center. If your screen looks different, search settings for “Accounts Center” rather than relying on the position of an icon.
  2. In Accounts Center, open Your information and permissions. Choose the control for downloading or exporting your information. Meta calls the feature “Download Your Information” in its Accounts Center announcement; follow the equivalent export label if your current screen uses different wording.
  3. Select the Instagram profile you want. If the screen offers several Meta accounts, review the selection before continuing. A combined export may be useful if you intentionally want both Instagram and Facebook; it may also contain considerably more information than you meant to save.
  4. Review any information categories offered. If you need a narrow record, choose the relevant category instead of assuming an all-information request is necessary. If you want a broader personal archive, review the listed categories so you understand the scope. What is actually included depends on the account and the options shown.
  5. Review the date range, format, media quality, notification details, and destination if those controls appear. A shorter date range narrows what you request. A human-readable format may be more convenient for browsing, while a structured format can be useful for your own data analysis. Higher media quality can increase file size. Choose the device download if you want a local copy; an offered transfer to another service is a separate choice that requires considering that service's privacy and storage terms.
  6. Submit the request using the button shown in Accounts Center. Return to the export area or follow Instagram's notification instructions when the file is ready. Do not assume the file will arrive in a fixed number of days. The preparation time can vary with the request and platform processing.

The Instagram Help Center export guide is the place to check if a menu name has changed. No third-party downloader or password-sharing service is needed to use Meta's own export control.

What will be in the download?

Treat the selection screen as the inventory for your request. Depending on the categories available and selected, it may include copies of content and records associated with the account. The sensible check is to open the delivered archive and verify the particular photos, posts, or records you needed. An “all available information” choice describes the export tool's available scope, not an unlimited historical backup of everything that ever existed on or around your account.

There are several reasons a hoped-for item may be absent. You may have selected a limited date range or omitted a category. Some content belongs to another account, including a post you merely saved or were tagged in. An item may have been deleted, may no longer be available to the export tool, or may be handled through a different privacy control. We have not verified an exhaustive Instagram export inventory for every account type, so avoid treating the archive as evidence that an unlisted event never happened.

If you primarily want your own uploaded photos and videos moved to a different service, compare the export and transfer controls before choosing. Meta describes transfer as a separate Accounts Center feature for Instagram photos and videos. A transfer may fit that narrower goal; an account-information archive serves a different purpose.

Protect the file after it arrives

An archive may contain personal details, private conversations, or account activity. Download it on a device you control. Save it in a private location, consider a protected backup, and remove extra copies from shared devices or folders. If you need to inspect a file, use the format's ordinary local viewer first. Do not upload the archive to an unfamiliar “Instagram data viewer” just to browse it, and do not send it to someone who asks for your login or a copy of your messages.

Before you discard the download link or delete your account, open the archive and check a few expected folders or records. A successful request is not the same as a verified backup. If the requested item is missing, recheck the selected account, categories, and dates. Then use the official Instagram export help for the current options rather than guessing which setting to change.

If you believe your account has been compromised and you cannot sign in, an export request is not an account-recovery process. Follow Instagram's account access guidance instead. Once access is secure, you can decide whether to request an archive.

Common questions

Can I download just my Instagram photos?

Look at the categories and destination choices shown for your account. Meta says its information tools can download Instagram photos you've uploaded, and it separately offers a transfer feature for Instagram photos and videos. Choose the option that matches whether you want a local archive or a copy sent to another supported service. Check the resulting file rather than assuming it contains every original-resolution camera image.

How long will Instagram take to prepare the file?

There is no reliable “within a couple of days” promise to make here. Preparation depends on the request and the current service. Watch the status or notification channel shown when you submit, and use the current Instagram Help Center instructions for any stated deadline to collect a ready file.

Will the export recover deleted posts or messages?

Do not use it as a recovery guarantee. The request creates a copy of information the export tool makes available under your selections. If something important is missing, check the account, date range, and categories, but do not assume a previously deleted item is recoverable simply because you requested a download.

Is downloading the archive the same as deleting my Instagram data?

No. Downloading gives you a copy to keep. Meta lists access, download, transfer, and other information controls separately in Accounts Center. An export does not itself remove information from your account. If you plan to delete the account, check the separate deletion instructions and verify your copy first.
