How to Sync Contacts on Facebook
Learn how to upload contacts in the Facebook app, what the setting does, and how to stop uploads or review contacts already shared.
To upload contacts from your phone to Facebook, open the Facebook app, go to Settings & privacy → Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Upload contacts, select your Facebook account, and follow the option shown on your device. On Android, Meta currently calls the switch Continuous contacts upload; on iPhone, it calls it Upload contacts. You may also need to allow Facebook to access contacts in your phone's settings. Check what you are sharing before turning the feature on: an address book contains information about other people, including people who do not use Facebook.
This guide explains the current path documented by Facebook Help, the difference between phone access and an upload setting, and what to review if you change your mind. Facebook changes its menus, and the labels can vary by app version, device, and language. If your screen looks different, search Facebook Settings for “Upload contacts” and use the matching account setting rather than following a screenshot from an older guide.
Before you upload your address book
Contact upload is optional. It is a way to let Facebook use information from your phone's contacts for connection features; it is not required to use Facebook or to send someone a friend request. An address book can contain names, phone numbers, email addresses, work contacts, service providers, and people who have never joined Facebook. Review that list and decide whether sharing it fits your expectations and the expectations of the people in it.
Do not treat the feature as a guaranteed phone-number search. A person may use a different number or email, may have settings that limit how they can be found, may not have an account, or may not be suggested to you. Contact upload also does not make someone your friend or send a friend request on its own. Facebook has separate controls for invitations; its privacy help says users can choose whether to invite uploaded contacts. Read the screen before confirming an invitation so you do not message someone unintentionally.
If you only need to connect with one person, ask them for their profile link or search their name first. That avoids uploading an entire phone book for a single connection. If you manage a shared, business, or family device, check whose contact data is stored on it before granting access. A device permission is not the same as permission from each person listed in the address book.
How to upload contacts in the Facebook app
Meta's current contact-upload instructions describe the following path for the Facebook mobile app:
- Open Facebook and tap the Menu button. Its position differs between Android and iPhone and can change with app layout.
- Open Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Select Accounts Center and open Your information and permissions.
- Select Upload contacts, then choose the Facebook account you intend to use.
- On Android, review Continuous contacts upload and choose Get Started if you want to enable it. On iPhone, review Upload contacts and choose Continue if you want to enable it.
If your phone asks whether Facebook may access contacts, read the permission prompt. Your operating system controls whether the app can read your device contacts; Facebook's setting controls the product feature described above. Both may need to be enabled for uploading to work. The exact permission choices available depend on your phone and software version, so use your device settings to see what is actually allowed on your device.
Make sure the selected account is the one you want. People with more than one account in Accounts Center can otherwise change the wrong setting. If you cannot find Upload contacts, update the Facebook app and search within its settings. If the option still does not appear, use Facebook's current Help Center for your device; do not assume the feature is available to every account or location.
What happens after you turn it on?
The setting allows Facebook to use uploaded contact information as described in its help and privacy material. A contact match can be one signal for connection suggestions, but it does not guarantee that any particular person will appear in People You May Know. It also does not tell you whether a contact has a Facebook account simply because they do not appear. Avoid using suggestions as a way to confirm a private phone number or email address.
On Android, the word continuous matters: the setting is for ongoing contact upload, not merely a one-time search. Check the prompt presented in the app before agreeing, particularly if you regularly add or edit work and personal contacts. On iPhone, Meta's help uses a different switch name; follow the description shown in your app rather than assuming both devices have identical behavior. A setting in Facebook should not be confused with contact-related settings in Messenger or Instagram. Review each product you use if you want to manage all of your Meta contact sharing.
Meta also explains that people can appear in contact information uploaded by someone else. Someone in your phone book need not be a Facebook user to be affected by an upload. The Meta notice on contact uploading and non-users is the place to check its current explanation and options. Consider this before enabling the feature, especially for work contacts or anyone who has asked you not to share their details.
How to stop future uploads or review previously uploaded contacts
If you no longer want Facebook to upload contacts, return to Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Upload contacts, select the Facebook account, and turn off the upload option shown there. Also review the phone's app permissions if you do not want Facebook to retain access to the local address book. The phone setting and the Facebook setting control different parts of the process, so check both.
Turning off an upload setting concerns future access. It does not, by itself, prove that an earlier uploaded list has been removed. Facebook's upload help page has a separate path to manage contact uploading or delete contacts you've uploaded. Use that linked control if you want to review or remove an existing upload, and verify the result in your account. Menu labels and availability may differ by device.
If you previously used Messenger contact syncing, review Messenger separately. If you use Instagram's contact discovery, review that product's settings separately too. Changing the Facebook switch is not a reliable substitute for checking every connected app. You can also check whether a contact invitation was sent: Facebook says an already sent SMS or email invitation cannot be recalled, although removing uploaded contacts can prevent further invitation reminders. That distinction is explained in its privacy troubleshooting help.
If contacts or suggestions do not appear
First confirm that you are signed into the expected Facebook account and that the app shows contact upload as enabled. Then check the phone's contact permission for Facebook. If either setting is off, the upload may not run. A recently changed permission might require you to close and reopen the app; use the app's own status or Help Center before assuming an upload succeeded.
Next, check the question you are really trying to answer. If you want to find a particular person, a profile link is more reliable than waiting for a suggestion. If you want to know whether that person uses Facebook, a missing suggestion cannot establish that. If you want to stop sharing contacts, use the account's upload and deletion controls instead of looking at the suggestions list. These are different tasks with different checks.
Avoid repeatedly turning the setting on and off to force a match. Facebook does not publish a guarantee that a specific contact will appear or when suggestions will refresh. If the feature is unavailable or confusing in your app, follow the device-specific Facebook Help page and use the in-app help route for an account-specific issue.
The practical choice
Use contact upload only if you are comfortable sharing the address book that your phone makes available to Facebook. For one or two people, asking for a profile link is usually simpler. For broader discovery, review the listed contacts, the selected Facebook account, your phone permission, and the upload setting before proceeding. If you later change your mind, turn off future upload and separately check the option to delete contacts that were uploaded earlier.
