How to Turn Off Profile Views on TikTok
Turn off TikTok profile view history, then check post view history and video audience settings. Learn what each switch changes and where privacy limits remain.
If you want to stop other people from seeing that you visited their TikTok profile, turn off Profile view history in your privacy settings. Open TikTok, go to Profile → Menu ☰ → Settings and privacy → Privacy → Profile views, and switch Profile view history off. TikTok says that when this setting is off, you cannot see who viewed your profile through the feature, and others cannot see your visits through it either. The change concerns profile visits. It does not change who can watch your videos, clear a video's view count, or switch off a separate post-view feature.
“Turn off views” can mean several things: hiding your visit to another profile, preventing someone from seeing you watched a post, or limiting who can watch your own content. TikTok gives these questions different settings. Pick the one that matches your concern before changing a wider privacy control.
Turn off profile view history
In the TikTok app:
- Tap Profile at the bottom.
- Tap Menu ☰ at the top, then Settings and privacy.
- Open Privacy, then Profile views.
- Turn Profile view history off.
TikTok also describes routes through a profile-view notification or the profile-view button when those are available. The settings route is the clearest one to try first. If you do not see Profile views, check the eligibility note below before assuming an icon has moved. Menu labels can change with an app update or language setting.
The switch works both ways. With profile view history off, you give up the feature's list of eligible people who visited your profile. Your own visits are no longer shown to other people through profile view history. This is a setting about history, not a way to make your account or name disappear. Someone may still find your public profile, see your public posts, or notice an interaction you choose to make elsewhere on TikTok.
Who can use profile view history?
TikTok says this feature is available to people 16 or older with fewer than 5,000 followers. It displays eligible visits from accounts that also have profile view history on within the last 30 days. It does not provide a complete list of everyone who has ever opened a profile. TikTok says the setting is off by default. If the control is absent, account eligibility may explain it; an absent control is not proof that no one can view your profile.
Do not rely on an old screenshot that tells you to tap a footprint icon or look for a particular toggle color. The official route through Privacy identifies the setting by name and better survives interface changes. If your account does show a profile-view icon, you can use it as a shortcut, then verify the state of Profile view history in settings.
Profile visits are different from post views
Profile view history concerns visits to a profile page. Post view history concerns who watched a post. They are separate controls, and turning off one does not turn off the other. If your actual worry is “Will someone know I watched their video?”, check Post view history as well as Profile views.
To find the post setting, go to Profile → Menu ☰ → Settings and privacy → Privacy → Post views, then turn Post view history on or off. TikTok says the feature is available to people 16 or older with fewer than 5,000 followers. Its help page describes viewer information for posts from the last seven days and different conditions depending on whether the viewer follows the creator. It is not a complete list of every video you have watched.
There is an important limit: TikTok says that even if you turn off Post view history, likes and comments you leave on someone else's post can still appear as views to them. If you want to avoid announcing that you watched a post, consider your visible interactions too. TikTok says Story view history is separate again, so neither of these switches is a promise about Story viewing.
Does turning off profile views hide my video's view count?
No. A profile-history switch changes whether eligible profile visits appear in that feature. TikTok's documented post controls are about viewer history and the audience allowed to watch the post. TikTok says a post's view count reflects views to date and does not reset when you change its privacy setting. Do not expect a privacy edit to erase a previously recorded number.
If you mean “How can I stop new people watching my video?”, change the post audience, described below. If you mean “How can I stop a person knowing I watched their post?”, review Post view history and your likes or comments. Those are different decisions from turning off Profile view history.
Limit who can watch your TikTok posts
For an existing post, TikTok directs you to open it from your profile, tap More options …, find Privacy settings, and choose Who can view this post. You may need to swipe along the options row to find the privacy menu. For a new post, choose the audience on the preview or post screen before publishing. Check the selected audience on each post that matters to you, because TikTok allows post-specific settings.
On a public account, TikTok documents Everyone, Friends (followers you follow back), and Only you as post audiences. On a private account, the listed choices are Followers, Friends, and Only you. If your goal is to keep a particular post from other people, Only you is the narrowest documented audience. If your goal is to share with an approved group, consider the account and post settings together.
TikTok says a private account lets you approve followers who may watch your videos and see other selected account information. A public account may expose posts to people on or off TikTok, subject to the audience you choose. Making an account private does not hide your name, username, or profile photo; TikTok says those remain visible. Changing visibility also does not reset the count of views already recorded on a post. Review each affected post rather than assuming an account-wide switch changes every audience in the way you expect.
When should you use each setting?
- You only want to browse profiles without appearing in profile-view history: switch off Profile view history. You also lose access to that history for your own profile.
- You want to review whether a creator can see that you watched a post: inspect Post view history. Remember that a like or comment can still identify an interaction.
- You want to restrict who watches your own post: change that post's audience. This affects access going forward; it does not erase the recorded view count.
- You want a broader account audience limit: consider a private account, then review each post's audience and the profile details that remain visible.
These choices answer different privacy questions. Start with the smallest setting that addresses yours and check the result in the TikTok app. Feature availability can differ by account eligibility, age, region, and current app interface.
Frequently asked questions
Can someone see that I viewed their TikTok profile if my profile view history is off?
TikTok says your visit will not appear to them through profile view history when your setting is off. That does not make your other actions invisible. A follow, like, comment, or message is a separate interaction. The profile-history feature itself applies only to eligible accounts using the feature.
Will I still see who viewed my profile after turning it off?
No. TikTok describes this as a mutual setting: when you turn profile view history off, you also stop seeing who viewed your profile through that history. When enabled, its list is limited to eligible accounts with the setting on that visited within the last 30 days.
Is profile view history the same as post view history?
No. Profile history is about visits to account profiles. Post history is about viewers of posts and has its own switch under Privacy → Post views. TikTok also treats Story view history separately. Check the specific activity you care about before assuming one switch covers it.
Can I remove views already counted on my video by making it private?
TikTok says changing a post's privacy setting does not reset the view count; it reflects views to date. Setting a narrower audience can limit who can watch the post under the new setting. It is not a way to rewrite past viewing activity.
Why can't I find the Profile views setting?
TikTok says profile view history is for people at least 16 years old with fewer than 5,000 followers. Start with Profile → Menu ☰ → Settings and privacy → Privacy and look for Profile views there. If it is absent, eligibility and current app availability are possible explanations; this guide cannot verify your account from outside TikTok.
