How to Unpin a Post on Facebook

Find the pinned item on your Facebook Page, group or profile and remove its pin without deleting the post. See what to check when Unpin is missing.

To unpin a Facebook post, go to the place where it was pinned, find the post or its entry in Featured, and look for an Unpin option in that item's menu. On a Page, you may need to act as the Page and open its Featured controls. In a group, Meta documents a removal route through Group settings for pinned items. On a personal profile, check the pinned post's own menu. The exact controls depend on whether the item is on a Page, in a group, or on your profile, and on the Facebook interface you see.

Unpinning is a change to the item's special placement. It is different from deleting the post. If you want to keep the original post, stop before choosing Delete, Move to trash, or any other removal action that affects the post itself. This guide starts with the location of the pin because the same three-dot symbol can open different menus on a post, a Featured tile, or the whole Page.

First, identify where the post is pinned

Look at the name and layout of the place displaying the item. A personal profile belongs to an individual account. A Page has its own identity and can have a Featured area for highlighted items. A group has its own discussion area and may show pinned posts, rules, or features in Featured. The person who can change a pin also differs: Meta says group admins and moderators can pin group items, and its Page Help describes Page pinning for people with Facebook access to the Page. A visitor should not expect to remove somebody else's pin simply because they can see it.

If you reached the post through your general Feed, open the original profile, Page, or group before trying to unpin it. A Feed copy may not show management controls for the place where the post was highlighted. Similarly, a saved post or a shortcut you pinned for your own navigation is a different kind of pin. Check that the item you want to change is actually displayed as a pinned post or Featured item on the relevant surface.

Unpin a post from a Facebook Page

If you manage the Page, open Facebook under the identity with Page access and navigate to that Page. Look near the top for Featured and a control such as Manage. Open the pinned item's options and select Unpin if it appears. Confirm the action if Facebook asks, then return to the Page to check whether the item has left Featured. Meta's Page pinning Help page is the first place to compare the current interface for your account.

Some Page layouts may also put a pin command in the original post's options. If opening that menu shows only Pin or Pin to Featured, it may be the wrong item, a post that is not currently pinned, or a different view of the Page. Go back to Featured and inspect the tile for the item you intend to remove. Do not infer that an unrelated Remove or Delete command means unpin; read its confirmation text before you act.

It matters which identity you are using. A Page can be visible while you are browsing as your personal profile, but management options may appear only after you switch to the Page or use the appropriate Page access. If a teammate set the pin and you cannot see its controls, ask the person who manages Page access to check your permissions. Access to view or interact with a Page is not proof that you can manage its Featured items.

Page Featured can contain more than a standard post. Meta describes posts, upcoming events, and recent videos as items that may be pinned there. If the tile is an event or video, use the controls on that Featured item instead of hunting for a regular text post in the Page feed. The goal is to remove its Featured placement, not to delete the event or video itself.

Unpin an item from a Facebook group

Meta's group pinning Help page says group admins or moderators can pin posts, rules, and certain features to the group's Featured section. On the computer path documented there, open the group, choose Group settings, find Added to group, choose Edit beside the item, and select Unpin. Check the group again afterward to confirm that the intended item no longer appears among its pinned items.

That Help page calls these entries items, which matters when troubleshooting. A post, a rule, and a group feature can be displayed together as pinned items, while their editing controls may differ. If you are trying to unpin a post, first inspect its own options or its tile in Featured for a matching Unpin command. If the group interface does not offer one there, check the documented Group settings route. Do not choose a similarly named command for a rule or feature unless that is the exact thing you meant to change.

If you are a regular group member, you may be able to view or create posts without having pin-management rights. Ask a group admin or moderator to remove an outdated group pin. The group's public or private status affects who can see its pinned content, according to Meta, but it does not give every viewer permission to manage it. If the post itself violates group rules, reporting or asking moderators to review it is a separate decision from unpinning it.

What about a post on your personal profile?

Open your own profile and locate the post that appears pinned. Open the options on that post and look for Unpin post, Unpin from profile, or equivalent wording. If Facebook offers that choice, select it and check the profile again. This is a conditional path: the official Help material reviewed for this draft did not establish one current, universal sequence for unpinning ordinary profile posts across app and web versions.

If you see a Featured collection of photos or stories instead of a pinned ordinary post, do not assume the post's menu controls that collection. Open the collection's management controls and read what the removal choice applies to. Facebook also has separate ways of pinning other media, such as Reels, so identify the exact item before acting. A menu that lacks Unpin is a reason to check the item type and account context, not a reason to delete the underlying content.

If the post is on someone else's profile, you cannot manage that person's pin from your own account. A tagged post appearing on your profile is also a different question: profile-review, hiding, and audience controls concern how it appears to you or others, rather than whether its author has pinned it. Use the control matching the result you want.

What changes after you unpin?

The item should lose its special pinned or Featured placement once the action succeeds. The original post can remain available wherever Facebook otherwise displays it, subject to its audience, the Page or group settings, and Facebook's normal ordering. Do not expect a particular chronological slot or a guaranteed position in every viewer's Feed. Those displays can differ from the Page, group, or profile where you removed the pin.

Unpinning does not rewrite the post, change its audience, or take back copies that other people already saw or saved. If the text is outdated or sensitive, review the post itself separately. You may need to edit it, change its audience where Facebook allows, or delete it if that is truly your intention. Each action has a different consequence; read the exact label and confirmation before taking it.

If you want a different item highlighted, first verify that the old one has left Featured. Then use the available pin control for the new item. Do not assume pinning something new will automatically remove every earlier pin: Meta's Page and group descriptions allow lists of pinned items. Review the entire Featured area if your goal is to clear an outdated announcement.

If the Unpin option is missing

Start with the location. Are you viewing the original Page, group, or profile, or only a copy of the post in Feed? Return to the surface where the item is highlighted. On a Page or group, inspect Featured as well as the post's own options. If a menu says Pin, you may be looking at a different post or a place where the item is not currently pinned.

Next check your role. For a Page, verify that you are using the identity with the necessary Page access. For a group, Meta identifies admins and moderators as the people who manage group pins. For a personal profile, sign in as the owner of the profile. An option missing from a visitor's menu does not establish that the item cannot be unpinned by its manager.

Then check the item type and interface. A featured rule, group feature, event, video, Reel, and ordinary post can have different controls. The mobile app, mobile browser, and computer layout may present the same task differently. If the action is important and one layout is unclear, compare it with the current Meta Help page and another official Facebook interface available to your account. Avoid following an old screenshot blindly; use the current option that explicitly removes the pin or Featured placement.

Finally, verify the result after selecting Unpin. Reopen the Page, group, or profile and look for the item in Featured or at the pinned position. If it still appears there, refresh the view and check whether Facebook reported an error or asked for a final confirmation. Do not repeatedly choose Delete or change post visibility as a substitute for an unpin control. If the interface is failing, use Facebook's in-product Help or report-a-problem route with the exact surface, item type, and error message.

Quick answers

Does unpinning delete the post? It is meant to remove the special placement, while deletion removes the post itself. Read the confirmation if Facebook presents one; choose an action labeled Unpin for a placement change.

Can I unpin another person's group post? If you are an admin or moderator with the relevant group controls, Meta says you can manage pinned group items. Being the original author of a group post is not by itself the same as managing the group's Featured section.

Why is the post still near the top? It may be recent, appear through another featured entry, or be shown under Facebook's normal ordering after the pin is gone. Check the explicit pinned or Featured indicator instead of judging only by position.

Should I use the same three-dot menu everywhere? Use the menu attached to the specific item you want to unpin. On Pages and groups, the relevant control may be on the Featured tile or in management settings rather than on the original feed post. Match the command to the location of the pin before confirming.

The practical rule is to remove the pin on the right surface and verify the result there. If Facebook does not show an unpin control, check the item type and your access before making a broader change to the post.
