How to Unsend a Facebook Message in Messenger
Sent a Facebook Messenger message by mistake? Find the option that removes your sent message for everyone, see how it differs from deleting your copy, and understand the limits.
To unsend a message you sent on Facebook Messenger, open its conversation and open the options on that individual message. Look for Delete for everyone, Unsend for everyone, or an equivalent choice that explicitly says everyone. Confirm only after reading the prompt. A separate Delete for you choice removes the message from your own chat view while the other people in the conversation can still see their copies.
The exact wording and position can vary by app, device, and chat. Check the scope in Messenger's confirmation screen. “For you” does not retract another person's copy; “for everyone” is intended to remove your sent message from the shared chat. Meta's Messenger Help Center describes both choices.
Unsend a sent message on iPhone or Android
- Open Messenger and enter the conversation that contains the message.
- Find the specific message you sent. Press and hold its message bubble to open its actions.
- Look for Delete, Remove, Unsend, or a More menu. Labels can differ; use the message's menu rather than the menu for the whole conversation.
- If Messenger offers a choice of audience, select for everyone to remove that sent message from the other participants' normal chat view. Read the confirmation text and confirm.
- Return to the thread and check what Messenger shows. It may display a small notice that a message was removed instead of making the exchange look as though nothing happened.
If you only want the message out of your own view, choose for you. Pause at the final prompt and check which audience it names. Even the wider option cannot make a message unseen.
Find the same choice on a computer
Open the conversation through an available Messenger web interface or Facebook's messaging interface. Move the pointer over the individual message you sent and open the message's options, often shown as three dots. Choose the deletion or unsend control and read the next screen for for everyone versus for you. Confirm the option matching what you intend.
Menus can differ by account, conversation type, and interface. If you see only for you, do not assume it secretly unsends the message. Check that you opened the menu on a message you sent and consult Messenger's Help if the broader option is absent.
What changes for the other person?
Deleting for everyone is meant to remove the selected sent message from the conversation's normal view for its participants. Meta has also described a notice replacing a removed message in the chat. The other person may therefore be able to tell that you removed something, even if the message body is no longer shown there. The appearance of that notice may vary with the current interface.
Unsend is not a rewind of everything that happened after you tapped Send. Someone may already have read the message in the conversation. They may have seen a notification preview, copied the text, saved an attachment, or taken a screenshot before you acted. Removing the Messenger message cannot erase another person's memory or a separate copy outside the chat. Do not rely on a read indicator as proof that no one saw the content: a notification or another device may expose part of a message before the recipient opens the thread.
This matters when the message contains a password, payment detail, or address. Remove it for everyone if offered, then take a separate protective step: change a disclosed password or contact your bank through its official channel about card details. Message removal cannot secure a credential another person might have read.
“Delete for you” is different from “Delete for everyone”
The names sound similar, but they answer different needs. For you tidies your own chat. For everyone is the option for a message you sent that you want taken out of the shared thread. A message sent by someone else is not yours to retract for the group through your personal message menu. You may be able to remove your local view of it, but the sender and other participants retain their own views.
Deleting or archiving an entire conversation changes how it appears in your inbox; it does not wipe everyone else's account. For one mistaken line, use that line's menu rather than the conversation menu.
Can you unsend a message after it has been read?
Read status and removal scope are different questions. Look at the choices Messenger actually offers for your sent message. If a for everyone option is available, select it if you want that message removed from the shared thread. The other person's earlier viewing is still possible and cannot be undone. The old article's claim that the Unsend button moves into More specifically because the message is unread is unsupported; menu layout should not be used to diagnose whether someone read the content.
Avoid relying on an old fixed deadline as well. Meta's 2019 announcement described a ten-minute window when the feature launched, while current Help describes the delete choices without a clearly readable public time limit in our review. Use the current in-app choice as the practical test. If a deadline or eligibility restriction matters to you, verify it in Messenger's current Help and confirmation text rather than assuming a historical number.
If you need to fix a typo, consider Edit
For a small mistake in a message you just sent, Messenger may offer Edit. Meta says editing a message is available for up to 15 minutes after sending. Editing changes the message in the chat; it is not the same as removing it. Meta also says earlier versions of an edited message can be included when abuse is reported, so editing is not a way to make a sensitive first version disappear from every context.
Choose Edit if it appears and a correction is what you need. If it is absent, check the time since sending and current Help, or send a clear follow-up such as “Sorry, I meant Tuesday.”
Why the “for everyone” option might be missing
First check whether the message is yours. If it was sent by someone else, your menu should not be expected to offer a way to retract it for that sender. Next check that you opened the message bubble rather than the chat list's menu or conversation header. A chat-level delete affects your inbox, while an individual message menu is where the scope choice belongs.
If you are on a different device or Messenger version than a guide's screenshots, look for a control with the same meaning rather than one exact label. Meta has used Remove, Unsend, and Delete wording over time. The confirmation screen's “for everyone” or “for you” phrase is more useful than the first button name. If your menu still lacks a wider-removal choice, do not promise yourself that a browser extension, account deletion, or blocking the recipient will retract the message. Those are different actions. Use Messenger's official Help for the specific chat and, if the message was sensitive, manage the information as already disclosed.
Quick answers
Will the recipient be notified when I unsend? The chat may show a removal notice. There may also have been an earlier notification for the original message. We cannot verify a single notification outcome for every device and conversation, so do not promise a silent removal.
Can I unsend a whole conversation for everyone? The individual sent-message control is the one to look for. Deleting a chat from your inbox is not the same as deleting its history for another participant. Remove a particular message from its own menu if Messenger offers the wider choice.
Can I unsend someone else's message? You can manage what appears in your own view, but that is different from retracting another person's sent message for everyone. If a message is abusive or unsafe, use Messenger's reporting and safety tools instead of treating local deletion as a group-wide remedy.
Does a missing read receipt mean the message is safe to retract without anyone seeing it? No. Read receipts describe one signal in Messenger. Notification previews, other devices, and screenshots make an unseen-message guarantee impossible. Choose the correct deletion scope and assume the other person might already know what was sent.
The reliable check is the final choice Messenger presents: for everyone when you want to remove your own sent message from the shared chat, for you when you only want to clean your view. Neither choice can take back words that somebody has already seen or saved.
