What Does “Active Today” Mean on Instagram?
‘Active Today’ is an Instagram activity hint, not proof someone read your message. Learn what it means, why it may be missing, and how to control your status.
If an Instagram conversation shows “Active Today,” read it as a broad sign that Instagram considers the account recently active. It is not a precise clock, a promise that the person is online now, or confirmation that they saw your message. Instagram's Activity Status setting controls whether eligible people can see current or recent activity. The exact label shown in your inbox can vary with the app and the information available for that conversation.
The most useful distinction is simple: activity, message delivery, and message reading are different things. Someone can use Instagram without opening your chat. They can read a notification or see part of a message outside the conversation, and a status label alone cannot tell you which of these happened. Meta also provides separate read-receipt controls for Instagram chats. Treat the activity label as context, not evidence about a person's attention or intentions.
Is “Active Today” a specific number of hours?
No public Instagram guidance we verified establishes the often-repeated claim that “Active Today” means exactly eight to 24 hours ago. The wording suggests activity sometime during a recent day, but the label alone does not disclose the minute or hour of the last session. Calendar boundaries, display updates, account settings, and app changes can also affect the wording you see. Do not subtract a fixed number from the current time to reconstruct when someone was online.
You may see other labels, such as a green dot, “Active now,” or a relative time. These are different interface presentations of activity information, rather than a set of precise attendance records you can audit. Their presence or absence should not be used to track another person. If an exact time matters for a plan, ask them directly rather than relying on an inbox status.
Does “Active Today” mean they read my DM?
No. The activity label speaks about Instagram use, while a read receipt-when shown and enabled-concerns a particular message or chat. Meta describes read receipts as a separate chat control that people can adjust for all chats or an individual conversation. Even a read receipt has a narrower meaning than “they are ready to answer”: it indicates how Instagram marked a message, not why a person did or did not reply.
For the same reason, “Active Today” cannot prove someone is ignoring you. A person might be viewing a Reel, checking a different DM, handling a notification, or sharing a post. The status does not show their schedule, whether they are busy, or whether they intend to respond. A message sent two hours earlier may or may not have been seen; both possibilities are compatible with the status label.
If your message concerns a deadline, send one clear follow-up through a channel you both normally use. State the decision or time you need, and leave room for a response. Avoid repeatedly checking activity labels as if they were a substitute for a reply.
Why can I see it for one account but not another?
Activity Status is a visibility feature, not a public directory of everyone's Instagram use. Instagram's Help Center article on Activity Status describes controls for showing current and recent activity. Whether a status appears depends on the account's sharing setting, your own setting, the relationship or conversation, and the app surface. A missing label therefore has several ordinary explanations. It does not, by itself, establish that someone blocked you, restricted you, stopped using Instagram, or deliberately hid from you.
Check your own account first if all status labels disappear. When you turn off your Activity Status, Instagram's guidance says you also lose the ability to see other accounts' activity status. If only one conversation is different, the other account may have a different setting or you may be seeing a different inbox view. App versions and feature availability can change the interface. There is no reliable reason to infer a personal decision from a blank status field.
Meta's Sleep mode description provides another example of why presence wording is contextual: when a person enables that mode, Meta says their activity status changes and an automatic DM reply can be sent. Sleep mode is a time-management choice. It is not a signal that a particular conversation was opened or rejected.
How do I control my own Activity Status?
In the Instagram app, open your profile, then its settings menu. Look for Messages and story replies and Show activity status, or use the settings search if your menu is arranged differently. Review the switch before changing it. If the setting is unavailable in your version, use Instagram's current Help Center instructions and update the app through its official store. Menu labels can differ between iPhone, Android, web, and app versions.
Turning the status off is a privacy choice. It hides the current or last-active signal from people who would otherwise be eligible to see it, and you may no longer see theirs. It does not delete your account, leave conversations, erase messages, stop people from sending DMs, or make all of your activity invisible. Likes, comments, posts, and replies have their own visibility rules. Review those settings separately if your goal is broader privacy.
Read receipts deserve a separate check. Meta explains that Instagram lets people turn read receipts on or off for all chats or specific chats. Changing Activity Status should not be presented as a guaranteed way to hide whether a message was read. If you want to manage both, inspect both settings rather than assuming one controls the other.
Can “Active Today” stay visible after someone closes the app?
The label is about recent activity, so it can remain after a live session ends. That is precisely why it should not be read as “online now.” We did not find a current Instagram specification that promises a particular refresh interval for this label. A delay, cached view, or changed label may occur without revealing what the person is doing at that instant. If a status seems inconsistent across devices, refresh the inbox or revisit it later before assuming an account problem.
Likewise, closing or uninstalling Instagram on one phone is not the same as changing Activity Status across an account. A person might access Instagram on another device or through a browser. Their status visibility depends on account settings and current platform behavior. If you need to hide your own last-active information, use the Activity Status control rather than relying on leaving one app installation alone.
The short answer
“Active Today” is a coarse recent-activity label in Instagram's messaging experience. It does not establish an exact eight-to-24-hour window, identify which conversation someone opened, or tell you whether they chose to ignore a message. Check your own Activity Status setting if labels are missing, and use the separate read-receipt control if your concern is message visibility. For a time-sensitive conversation, the other person's reply is more useful than the status beneath their name.
