How Many Friends Can You Have on Facebook?
Facebook personal profiles have a 5,000-friend limit. Learn what happens at the limit and how following, Pages, and privacy settings differ.
A Facebook personal profile can have up to 5,000 friends. If you reach that limit, adding another person as a friend requires an open place on your list. Following a profile or Page is a different connection: it can let someone see public updates without becoming a friend, when that profile allows followers. Neither a Follow button nor professional mode turns a follower into an extra friend.
The distinction matters when you are trying to connect with someone whose list is full. It also matters if you use your profile to share work or community updates with a broader audience. Before changing settings or removing a friend, decide whether the person needs a mutual Facebook friendship or only wants to see your public posts.
What does the 5,000-friend limit count?
The limit applies to friends on a personal profile. A friendship is a connection accepted by both people. It is separate from someone following your public posts or following a Page you manage. Facebook's friend-limit help states that you can have up to 5,000 friends; Meta's pro-mode FAQ says that limit still applies with professional mode, while public followers can be unlimited. Meta's Follow help describes following as a way to see public updates.
Do not add follower counts and friend counts together and treat the result as a single allowance. A profile may show both numbers, but they describe different relationships. In particular, a person who follows you has not gained access to posts you share with Friends only. You choose the audience of each post, and Facebook explains those audience choices.
There is no verified extra allotment of 1,000 “queued friends” that automatically becomes friends when spaces open. A pending request still requires the usual acceptance and eligibility. If Facebook shows a request as pending, do not assume it will move into the friends list by itself when you unfriend someone.
What happens when the friend list is full?
If your own profile is at the cap, Facebook may prevent you from adding or accepting another friend until a place opens. The same limit may affect a request sent to someone whose list is full. Read the message Facebook shows for that particular request; it is better evidence than guessing from a missing Add Friend button.
A missing button alone does not establish that either person has 5,000 friends. Facebook also lets people restrict incoming requests to Everyone or Friends of Friends. A request may already be pending, or an account may have a temporary restriction. Check your own sent requests and any on-screen notice. Facebook's privacy help shows where the request-audience setting lives; only the profile owner can change their setting.
If you are checking somebody else's profile, respect the information they have chosen to make visible. Their full friends list may be hidden even if you can see mutual friends. A number displayed on a public profile, or an absent Add Friend control, is not a reliable diagnosis of the private reason a request is unavailable. Facebook explains how people control visibility of their Friends section.
How can you make room for a new friend?
If you want a mutual friendship and your own list is full, review your current connections and decide whether there is someone you no longer want on that list. You can unfriend a person from their profile using Facebook's own controls. Meta's safety guidance says Facebook does not send the person a notification when you unfriend them, although they can notice that the friendship is gone. Make that choice for your own relationship, not as an automatic clean-up rule.
After removing a friend, check the current friend count and try the new request through Facebook. Do not promise that an old pending request will automatically convert into a friendship or that the interface will update instantly. If Facebook shows a different limitation, follow its on-screen explanation. A third-party tool cannot legitimately raise the personal friend limit or guarantee that a request will be accepted.
Removing someone also changes what each of you may see. Posts shared only with Friends are no longer available to a person solely because they used to be your friend; public posts can still be visible subject to your other settings. Check the audience of your posts before you make a change if privacy is the reason you are reconsidering the connection.
Can people follow you instead?
Following is useful when someone wants your public updates but neither person needs a mutual friendship. Facebook's Follow help distinguishes that action from friending. The profile owner controls whether following is available. Facebook places relevant controls under Followers and public content in its privacy settings guidance. If you do not see a Follow option, do not assume it can be enabled for every profile or region; account type, age, and availability may affect what you see.
Before inviting people to follow, look at a post's audience selector. A follower should not be promised access to Friends-only posts. If you share a mix of personal and public updates, choose the audience when posting rather than making everything public just to reach people beyond your friends list. Facebook's public-profile controls also let you review who may interact with public profile information.
Following does not guarantee that each post will appear in every follower's Feed or that someone will engage with it. It is a way to make eligible public content available, not a substitute for a friendship or a reach guarantee.
Is professional mode or a Page the right option?
If you publish regularly for a broader audience, consider what the profile is meant to represent. Meta's friend-request Help page suggests turning on pro mode to connect with more than 5,000 people. Its more specific pro-mode FAQ clarifies the counts: professional mode allows unlimited public followers while the number of friends remains limited to 5,000. A person following your public content is still different from someone you have accepted as a friend.
A Facebook Page is another public-following route for a business, organization, creator, or community presence. It is not a conversion that silently turns all your personal friends into Page followers. A Page has different controls and a different purpose from a personal friends list. Choose it because it matches how you want to publish and manage a public presence, rather than as a trick for accepting more personal friends.
Facebook has also described additional personal profiles under one account. That announcement explains separate feeds, settings, and eligibility. It does not create extra friend slots on your original profile, and the availability of creating another profile may change. Do not create a second standalone account merely to work around a limit or a restriction. If you are considering another profile for a distinct part of your life, first check Facebook's current in-app options and account rules.
What if the friend count looks wrong?
Your own profile is the place to inspect your current friends and requests. If a count does not match what you expect, check whether you are comparing friends, followers, and pending requests. Those are not interchangeable. Also check whether you are viewing the same profile if you use more than one permitted profile under an account.
If Facebook shows a specific error after you have checked the list, save the wording of that error and use Facebook's Help Center or in-app reporting path. Do not enter your password into a “friend-limit remover” site, install an extension that promises extra friend slots, or send repeated requests to test a restriction. The safest next step depends on the message Facebook actually gives you.
Quick answers
Can a personal Facebook profile have more than 5,000 friends? Meta's friend-limit guidance sets the personal friends cap at 5,000. Followers and Page followers are different connections and do not increase that friend count.
Will pending requests fill spaces automatically? There is no verified 1,000-person queue or automatic replacement mechanism. Treat each pending request as a request, not a reserved friend slot.
Does professional mode remove the friends cap? No. Meta's pro-mode FAQ says you can have unlimited public followers but remain limited to 5,000 friends. Pro mode can help more people connect with your public posts; it does not turn those followers into accepted friends.
Can I follow someone who cannot accept my request? Sometimes, if that profile permits followers. Following lets you see eligible public updates. It does not grant access to Friends-only content or require them to accept you as a friend.
Should I start another account? A separate standalone account is not a sound workaround for a full friends list. Use Facebook's actual friend-management, following, Page, or permitted additional-profile controls according to your purpose and current eligibility.
