How to Remove a Follower on Instagram
Remove an Instagram follower from your Followers list, then check what changes on public and private accounts. Learn when to unfollow or block instead.
To remove someone who follows you on Instagram, open your profile, open Followers, find that account, and use the Remove control beside it. Confirm if Instagram asks. This takes the account off your follower list. It does not delete their Instagram account, and it is different from unfollowing someone, which changes the accounts you follow. Instagram documents follower removal in its Help Center; the precise button and menu can differ between the mobile app and website.
The privacy result depends on whether your profile is public or private. A removed person is no longer one of your followers, but a public profile remains viewable as public content. On a private profile, the person is no longer an approved follower and must request to follow again before seeing follower-only posts, Stories, and Reels. Choose your account privacy setting deliberately before assuming removal hides your content.
Remove someone from your Followers list
- Sign in to the Instagram account whose follower list you want to change. Go to your own profile, not the other person's profile.
- Open Followers. Search within the list or scroll to the correct account. Check the username and profile carefully if several accounts look alike.
- Select the Remove action associated with that follower. Depending on the device and app version, Instagram may show a visible Remove button, an X, or a menu beside the account.
- Read any confirmation and select Remove if it is the account you intended. Return to your Followers list to check that the account no longer appears there.
These steps are for one account. If your screen looks different, use Instagram's current removal instructions for your device. A missing control may reflect a different interface or the fact that the account is not currently following you; do not assume every account offers the same menu. You can check from the Instagram app rather than giving your sign-in details to a third-party follower manager.
What changes after removal?
Removal changes one relationship: that account no longer follows yours. You do not automatically stop following them if you followed them before. To change your own Following list, use the separate unfollow action. Removal also is not a substitute for deciding who can see a public profile.
Do not assume the person will be unaware of the change. They may later visit your profile, see that they no longer follow you, or try to open content that your private-account settings now limit. Avoid treating the action as invisible in a sensitive situation.
If you remove someone by mistake, Instagram does not provide a simple assurance that the old follow relationship will be restored. The person can follow a public account again. For a private account, they would need to send a new follow request and you would need to approve it. Review the account before confirming removal, especially if you would prefer to keep a private follower.
Public account or private account: which result do you need?
For a public account, removing someone stops that account from following you at that moment. It does not make public posts, Reels, or profile information private. The person can still find content that remains public and may choose to follow again. If your aim is to keep future posts away from all unapproved viewers, removal alone does not accomplish that.
For a private account, Instagram limits posts, Stories, and Reels to approved followers. Once you remove a follower, that account is no longer approved for that content. They can request access again, but they cannot regain follower access unless you approve the request. People may still be able to see limited profile information that Instagram shows for private accounts; private does not mean an account disappears from search or every place it was previously mentioned.
If you are changing from public to private, review your current followers too. Making the account private controls new follower access, while removing an already approved person addresses that individual. Instagram settings, account types, and local age protections can affect what privacy controls are available; follow the options shown in your account rather than a screenshot from another profile.
Remove, unfollow, or block?
These controls solve different problems:
| Your goal | Control to consider | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Take a person off your follower list | Remove | They stop following your account. Public content may remain visible to them. |
| Stop seeing posts from an account you follow | Unfollow | Your account stops following theirs. It does not remove them from your followers. |
| Set a stronger boundary with a specific account | Block | Instagram restricts that account's ability to find or interact with yours. Meta also offers an option to cover other accounts the person may have or create. |
If you followed someone and they followed you back, removing them does not necessarily make the relationship mutual or end your follow of them. Check both Followers and Following if you want to change both directions. If you mainly want fewer posts from them in your feed, unfollowing is the relevant control; removing them from your followers would not address that feed choice.
Blocking is a more restrictive account-level choice when someone repeatedly re-follows, contacts, or harasses you. Instagram provides that control separately from removal. A block is not a guarantee that somebody can never see public information through another account or outside Instagram, so consider making the account private and reviewing what you share publicly if privacy or safety is the concern. You can also use Instagram's report tools for conduct that violates its rules.
If you cannot find the Remove option
Start by checking whether you opened your Followers list. The Following list and a button on somebody else's profile relate to your own follow of that person, not their follow of you. Search the exact username in your Followers list. If they are absent, there may be no active follower relationship to remove.
Next, look for a control beside the account row rather than assuming it must be a button with one fixed label. Instagram changes interfaces, and desktop and mobile layouts can differ. The official Help Center is the best reference for the version Instagram currently provides to you. If the app behaves unexpectedly, update it through your device's app store, retry from your own profile, and check whether the same control appears on instagram.com. These are troubleshooting checks, not proof that a missing feature is an account penalty.
Avoid “bulk removal” services that ask for your password or promise access beyond Instagram's own controls. Follower cleanup does not require handing a third party your sign-in. If you believe your account has been accessed without permission, use Instagram's account-security guidance before editing follower relationships.
A final privacy check
After removal, review your Followers list and your account's public or private setting. Ask yourself whether you want to stop a current follow, limit access to future posts, reduce what appears in your own feed, or prevent a specific account from contacting you. Those are different choices, and Instagram offers a different control for each. Removing a follower is the correct first step when the immediate task is taking one account off your follower list.
