How to Turn Off Read Receipts on TikTok
Find TikTok's Read status setting for direct messages, learn what changes when it is off, and keep read receipts separate from Activity Status and post views.
TikTok calls its direct-message read-receipt control Read status. In the app, open Profile → Menu ☰ → Settings and privacy → Privacy → Direct messages, then switch Read status off. TikTok gives that path in its Manage direct messages Help article. If the menu on your device looks different, look for the Read status control under direct-message privacy rather than changing an unrelated activity or notification setting.
Turning Read status off changes whether another person can see that you read their direct message under TikTok’s documented rule. TikTok says the other person knows you read a message only when both of you have Read status on. This is a two-way setting: when you switch yours off, you should not expect to see the other person’s read status either. It does not delete a message, stop people from sending you requests, or hide when you are active on TikTok.
Find the Read status setting
- Open the TikTok app and confirm the account whose message privacy you want to change. If you use more than one account, check the active username first.
- Tap Profile at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Menu ☰ near the top, then Settings and privacy.
- Choose Privacy, then Direct messages.
- Find Read status and turn it off. Return to this screen if you later want to review or reverse your choice.
These are the labels TikTok currently documents; the exact screen arrangement may vary with app version, account state, age, or region. The control is in Direct messages, not in the phone’s general notification settings. If you cannot find it, first confirm that you are in TikTok’s own privacy settings and that direct messaging is available on your account. An absent setting is not proof that someone has or has not read a specific chat.
TikTok says Read status is on by default for people aged 18 and older. That does not establish the state of your own account today: you or TikTok may have changed a setting since sign-up, and younger users have different messaging rules. Look at the control rather than assuming a default. TikTok’s teen privacy guidance explains that message features and defaults vary by age.
What happens after you switch it off?
The practical effect is narrower than “nobody can tell I used TikTok.” TikTok’s direct-message guidance describes Read status as the control for whether a person can know you read their direct message and vice versa. The sender sees that state only when both accounts have the setting enabled. If yours is off, the mutual condition is not met. It also means you do not have the same read-status visibility into their messages.
This does not take back a message you sent, remove a reply you already wrote, or erase a conversation. Nor does it block someone from contacting you. TikTok has separate direct-message controls for who can send you a message request, and separate actions to delete or mute chats, report a message, and block an account. Choose the control that matches your actual goal. A person who needs to stop an unwanted message request should review the request or blocking settings, not rely on Read status.
Do not treat the setting as a promise that a recipient has not otherwise inferred you saw something. You might respond, react, discuss a shared video elsewhere, or open content through another TikTok feature. Read status governs TikTok’s read marker for a direct message; it does not control every clue people may draw from your behavior. It also does not change a message that was already sent or explain why another person has not replied.
Read status is different from Activity Status
These two controls often appear close to the same chat experience but answer different questions. Read status concerns a specific direct message. Activity Status concerns whether certain mutual followers can see when you are active or were recently active on TikTok. TikTok’s Activity Status Help says both mutual followers must have that setting on to see each other’s status; it is off by default and available to people aged 18 or older.
Turning off Read status is not a documented way to turn off Activity Status. If you also want to hide the green active indicator or last-active information from eligible mutual followers, review Privacy → Activity Status separately. The reverse is also true: switching Activity Status off should not be presented as disabling message read receipts. Check both controls if both kinds of visibility matter to you.
Post view history is another separate feature. TikTok documents a setting for seeing who viewed eligible posts, with its own conditions. Its post-view-history Help also cautions that likes and comments can still appear as views even if post view history is off. A direct-message Read status switch does not change how you interacted with someone’s post or Story.
If a read indicator does not appear
An absent read marker does not prove the recipient ignored the message. Under TikTok’s rule, both sides must have Read status on for the sender to know a message was read. One person may have turned it off. The chat could also be a request rather than an accepted conversation, or the account may have a different messaging state. Do not infer a single cause from one missing indicator.
If your own switch is on and you still do not see a status, first check whether you are viewing a direct-message conversation in the same account you used to send it. Then read TikTok’s current Help for any account-specific limits shown in your app. Avoid third-party “seen tracker” extensions or sites that request your credentials; they cannot override TikTok’s privacy choices legitimately.
When you need a response, send a clear message and allow time for the other person to answer. A read marker, even when visible, does not tell you whether they understood a question, are ready to reply, or agreed to a request. For urgent or safety-critical communication, use an appropriate direct channel rather than interpreting an app indicator as confirmation.
If you want fewer messages instead
Read status is not an inbox filter. TikTok’s Manage direct messages Help explains that you can choose who may send message requests. TikTok distinguishes friends, accounts you follow, potential connections, and other users in its request controls, with additional limits for private and under-18 accounts. Review Privacy → Direct messages for the choices actually available to you.
If a specific person is bothering you, use TikTok’s in-app block or report controls as appropriate. Muting a chat reduces its interruption but does not revoke that person’s ability to send messages. Deleting a chat from your inbox is different from turning off read status or stopping future contact. Choose the narrowest control that solves your situation, and recheck the account you are using before changing a privacy setting.
TikTok’s app may change the labels or available options in a later release. The account’s current privacy screen is the operational source. The official Help Center gives the general route, but if your screen differs, do not tap a similarly named control until you know whether it governs message reads, online activity, post views, or notifications.
Quick answers
Where is TikTok Read status? Open Profile → Menu ☰ → Settings and privacy → Privacy → Direct messages → Read status in the app.
Will someone see that I read their message if my Read status is off? TikTok says a person knows you read their DM only when both of you have Read status on. Switching yours off removes that mutual condition.
Can I still see when they read my messages? Do not expect read-status visibility while yours is off. TikTok describes the setting as reciprocal.
Does this hide my green active dot? No. Activity Status is a separate privacy setting.
Does turning it off stop DMs? No. Use the message-request, block, or report controls for that purpose.
Is Read status always on by default? TikTok says it is on by default for people aged 18 and older. Check your current setting rather than relying on that default.
